Brand New Review

To begin with, Sony has been, by far, the most enjoyable corp with the Spider-Man IP.  From their “earliest” work with the Spider-Man Trilogy, towards their involvement in the Spider-Man game serie(s), and into the Spiderverse of Venom and Kraven.  Honestly, you could be webslinging all day on your next day off, and still not hit the B sides.

“With great power…”

It’s not always gonna be a knockout.

Spider-Man:  Brand New Day is Easily a 9 out of 10.

Look, it’s hard to follow up “Ten” with “Versus”, or “Empire Strikes Back” with “Return of the Jedi”, or “Dragon Ball Z” with “Dragon Ball GT”.

“…Comes Great Responsibility”

Spider-Man:  No Way Home was an absolute masterpiece.  Not only was this film able to skillfully and subtly merge an entire universe, but was able to navigate the increasingly convoluted and mass confusing Disney mess that has become the home of Marvel Studios, and do so in a way that was pleasant to the fan and occasional movie goer alike…

That was a hard act to follow.

3 years.

That is the first issue I have with the film.  December 17th, 2021 to July 31st, 2026, that was the length of not only a life span, but a couple of generational spans in the reality of a contemporary human’s attention span.  I know it takes a long time to complete a film; I know that it’s hard to work with actor’s, director’s, and staffing’s schedules, and I know that life is hard, but when it comes to a living, breathing, franchise like this… it’s easy to see how things “sputter” out.  The only Studio that had (almost) got It right, (and I can’t believe I am about to say this), is DC.  NOT now, but back when they attempted to have it all, Warner Bros. was the only corp that attempted to not only “web” some of their television, film, comic book, video game, web series, and animation studios together but do so, using the very same people who were so totally involved, cross-overing into the different mediums.  It was not a shocker to find a comic cowritten by a Warner Director, or an animated character voiced by their film counterpart, or the likeness of the character portrayed in a stand alone telling of a game or web series.  This all done, one right after another.  Before ANYONE thinks Marvel, dipping your toe in the water and immediately pulling it out when it’s too cold doesn’t count for the power cosmic or the council of Ricks.

The other issue that I take is a play on the first.

3 years.

I must have missed a movie or a television series, maybe a “web” series?  The pacing in the movie moves so fast, that I missed something Only I didn’t.  There was so much build up, there was so much tension, there was inception and culmination in the very titles themselves.

I am trying NOT to provide any spoilers here, but you can almost hold your breath from the start of the movie, (which “starts” where the last movie leaves off? – I guess), to where “Peter” Holland becomes an adult.  Coming full circle, there could have easily been a movie or two (… or other medium…), to help mansplain the passage of time… which not only accounted for a HUGE chapter in the original comic book telling, (Parker’s College years), but left a huge hole and loss of potential possibilities for an “amazing” super-hero that was COMPLETELY and TOTALLY forgotten by the world.  Like, not just by friends and family, but the last movie left with Peter Parker and Spider-Man no longer EXSISTING in the current universe.  A WHOLE SOMETHING could have been exploited by the potential of this idea.  This could have been pure gold or kryptonite… wait who are we talking about again…

9 out of 10.

I really have to nit pick here to get a minor point or two across, and as I pointed out, I am trying to not give out any spoilers.  It’s genuinely worth time.

There was a lot here to like, not just for a “super-hero” film, but it had a lot of genre bending content that made this a pleasant time spent for all audiences.  From sappy tear jerking to laugh out loud moments this one was really a breath of fresh air for a stagnant moment in ethos.

Most importantly, that “feeling” that you got when you first watched the first Avengers film… that something that pulled at your heart strings, that something that somehow felt nostalgic, nurturing, and hopeful all at once… yeah, there was a pang or two of that in here as well.

Sincerely, thank you all whom were involved in this great film.

In the great words of old, “Excelsior!”

This is a list of no lists.

There is not really a conceivable way to actually create “Top XX” lists, so we have decided to make a seasonal list of no lists that denote the “Best Of” of that particular moment in time. A snapshot of a fleeting glimpse. Enjoy this year, or the next..,

Autumn 2026

  • Anime

·       Mobile Suit Gundam Wing – The Series (Medium:  Anime Series – Genre:  Mecha Anime)

Why?  With the return to academics, this is a virtual “playlist” for afterschool.  Without binging, if an episode is regularly consumed in the “afternoon” after school or right before or right after extracurricular activities, it somehow adds the “cherry on top”.

·       Dragon Ball Z:  The Saiyan Saga – (Medium: Anime Series / Manga – Genre:  Action (Battle Shōnen)

Why?  This arc encapsulates what Dragon Ball Z is and sets the stage for 291 episodes of what would help open the world of Japanese animation into international pop culture.   It’s not that there was a specific defining moment that was “unforgettable” to a viewer, rather a continuous display of what a pre-internet culture was defining into pure artistry.

·       Higurashi: When They Cry – (Medium:  Anime Series – Genre:  Horror)

Why?  This may be the defining moment of anime into horror.  Slice of life?  Slice of something… or someone…

  • Film

·       It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown – (Medium:  Animated Film)

Why?  Not only a classic, but quintessential viewing for all ages, growing up, living and experiencing Halloween. If someone were to ask me “What is Halloween?”, I would get them a copy of this.  ‘Nuff Said.

Dark Link:  Halloween (1978) – (Medium:  Film – Genre:  Horror)

What!?!  This film is Halloween personified.

·       Princess Mononoke – (Medium:  Anime Film)

Why?  If autumn is about the fragility of life and the cost of time onto a mortal world, this film is a constant depiction of that idea.  This film hardly pulls any punches, forces you to look at yourself in the mirror and accept what you see looking back at you.

  • Music

·       October Rust – Album by Type O Negative (Medium:  Music – Genre:  Heavy Metal)

Why?  Its basically the “Magical Mystery Tour” for autumn.

·       Ten – Album by Pearl Jam (Medium:  Music – Genre:  Alternative Rock / Grunge)

Why?  Beyond being a rare album that is playable (enjoyable) from track one until its conclusion, but to shadow the “back to school” concept of the fall, this is the theme song(s) of college.  It’s the awakening into adulthood, the mediocracy of humanity, and the hope of sheer and utter depression of lack of progress by the last generation… sounds familiar…

Dark Link:  Nirvana:  Unplugged in New York – Album by Nirvana (Medium Music - Genre:  Grunge)

What!?!  If life and autumn are interchangeable as a metaphor for Birth and Death then Nirvana’s performance of what was and wasn’t meant to be was a truly raw depth of that concept personified.

·       Deltron 3030 – Album by Deltron 3030 (Medium:  Music – Genre:  Hip Hop)

Why?  It’s a masterpiece of musical experience and a thought invoking quest for what lies beyond.

  • Video Game

·       Final Fantasy 1 (One… yes, ONE and specifically the NES version) – (Medium:  Video Game – Genre:  RPG Fantasy)

Why?  Because someone had to take out Garland… but more importantly if playing old school table top Dungeons and Dragons with your buddies could somehow be played solo… this would actually be it.  A true defining moment in JRPG and video game history.

·       The Legend of Zelda:  A Link to the Past – (Medium:  Video Game – Genre:  Action Adventure)

Why?  This game cemented what is and what will be for the Zelda franchise.  Although this game did not create the lore, nor was this game the OG of the series, this game acted as the entry point for a general audience that was approachable for any player, regardless of age, sex, or ability.  Few games that are “rated E for Everyone” are actually accessible to everyone.  This game stands as a redwood in the forest for that concept.

Dark Link:  Castlevania:  Symphony of the Night- (Medium:  Video Game – Genre:  Metroidvania)

What!?!  This is not the first of the series, but this title was the starting point of a defining moment in a whole genre of the gaming industry.  With character designs from the timeless artistry of Ayami Kojima, and the haunting yet compelling music of Michiru Yamane, this was a winding saga of epic proportions.

  • Bonus (Table Top)

·       Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition – Ravenloft (TSR)

Why?  This is the definition of horror fantasy.  From the scrawling table top world into the castle that started it all, to the unforgettable novel series that slowly shapes a swirling, misting fog of intangible mysteries, only to wander your way back to where you started, albeit slightly different than when you took your first step forward.  The SAME, but different… weird…
